Can You Override Your Genetics?

by Jonathan on June 27, 2009

geneticsAre we preprogrammed for disease or good health? Do you believe that your genes control your health or can you override your genetics?

A fascinating field of research called “epigenetics” challenges the conventional beliefs about genetic programming and examines the physical effects of emotion on our bodies and health.

In this video, author and cellular biologist Dr. Bruce H. Lipton, explores the importance of perception in maintaining optimal health.

I’m not sure that you can override genetics completely, but if you know what types of illnesses run in your genes, you can slow or prevent their onset with proper nutrition and exercise.

Hi Kristi, you are so right about nutrition and exercise. This new research shows that our mental and emotional disposition also plays an important role. Some genetic disorders are already expressed at birth or soon after. In those cases it’s unclear how much influence we can have. But we now know that we can effectively influence genetic expression where it is still just a tendency.

Hi Jonathan,

I think the environment has a lot to do with health issues. What we breath in and have exposed our skin to, through the air, sounds more convincing to me then pre- condition genes. If you lived in the same area as your parents were raised – you have been exposed to the same environment.

Very interesting article and great video.

Hi Bunny, thanks for mentioning those environmental factors. Along the same lines, if we practice the same eating patterns as our parents and develop similar health issues, that doesn’t make it genetic either. In both cases the cause has nothing to do with genetics, but rather environment influence and learned behavior.

Hi Jonathan, I write about this in my second book…well, a facet of it. In terms of what I went through in the rainforest and the ability to alter our DNA, and to evolve in a very short time. Evolution need not take millennia. It would take to long to go into here, but this video just affirmed my own experience. This is a powerful powerful post and more importantly by posting it you invite people to remove the lid on their thinking. I REALLY like that. There are no limits. Thank you SO much my friend. Robin

Hi Robin, thanks for stopping by. Let’s pull those lids off and toss them away forever. What we all need most is to stop limiting ourselves and start allowing our potential to rise to the surface.

Very interesting.

I always believed that we have unlimited power over our biological structure and I was always interested in esoteric disciplines that sustained this idea. It’s the first time I see a scientific approach to this topic and I’m really happy about it. Things are changing.

Thanks for sharing :-)

Hey Dragos, I feel the exact same way. It feels good when science find ways to support what you already knew intuitively.
